FDA's MedWatch program warns prescribers of Liraglutide that the antidiabetic drug may cause acute pancreatitis and deadly thyroid tumors in patients.

According to FDA, these risks mean that the drug is not suitable for first-line therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The drug is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. Patients who are found during liraglutide therapy to have thyroid nodules should be evaluated by an endocrinologist.
